The Boy vs the Cynic was originally meant to be two records. I worked with my longtime friends CR Pendleton and Grant Harrison on that project and we were all over the board trying out new things. I was torn between wanting to write uplifting pop tunes and more experimental introspective music. I think everyone thought it most ideal to combine the best of both worlds for one album. For a while, I had a hard time appreciating that record. There are moments where I was extremely vulnerable and overtly obvious. I can hear myself blatantly working out my conflicting world views and faith issues. With perspective, I can see that the theme of
The Boy vs the Cynic would accurately describe much of my albums. The title track, with Tim Skipper from House of Heroes, is one of my favorite songs I've ever made.
