Ha, again, I'm sure you saw this coming a mile away. I see a lot of movies - usually for review purposes or while I'm sitting on the couch at home drawing - and I realize that so many movie fans have extremely varied tastes, but as you can see, I tend to gravitate towards movies that entertain. But I've seen so many BAD movies (just watch any number of
Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes) to know how incredible it is when you see a really, really GOOD movie. To me, my favorite movies are ones that impact me in some way and have a distinct rewatchability about it. For some, it's those little low budget indie films that really leave a mark, or a horror movie, or a psychological thriller, or a deep, human drama. For me, I kind of like the hybrids -- the "pop song" of the cinema. I appreciate great performances, great production, a replayable soundtrack, characters who are likeable and inspire, memorable dialog, and movies that often just make you feel good after watching it.
Avengers: Endgame was the culmination of over 20 Marvel movies over the span of 11 years. Say what you will about these movies, but they often have some serious talent behind them, and DC/Warner alone have proven how difficult it is to create a cohesive cinematic universe.
Avengers: Endgame isn't a perfect movie, but it gets a lot of things right -- from the tone to the way it pulls everything together and even wraps up some storylines. Captain America gets a great story arc here, too, and his shining moment during the film's big showdown with Thanos is easily one of my all-time favorite cinematic moments in history. (Thor knew it!) It was such a great pay-off from things set up in previous movies. So while anyone else might reach for an indie film as their favorite of the year, I have to give props to Marvel's
Avengers: Endgame. I do love this movie!
"I can do this all day."
"Yeah! I knoooow!"
Honorable Mentions: Ford v Ferrari. If I could pick 2 movies for 2019,
Ford v Ferrari would be an easy top choice, too. That movie blew me away. Fantastic performances from Bale and Damon, and just a really fun movie from beginning to end.
